With its gorgeous petals and vibrant colors, a lot of people especially women just can't stop admiring its charm, they just have to have it tattooed on their body.

Lily flowers are said to speak of purity, innocence, and chastity. In some cultures, the trumpet-like flower has evoked associations of erotic love and procreation. In Greco-Roman mythology, it was believed to have come from the milk of the goddess Juno. To the Jews, its the emblem of the tribe of Judah. Ancient Egyptians and Greeks connected the flower with fertility because of its erotic fragrance. In Christianity, its associated with Virgin Mary representing her purity as seen in early paintings and art.

Mermaid Tattoo Pictures

The ancient Greeks had their Sirens, whose haunting songs lured many a seafarer to his death. And the fifteenth andmermaid tattoo in blue sixteenth century explorers returned to Europe with tales of sea creatures who had the heads and upper torsos of a woman and fishes' tails instead of legs. They claimed that these mysterious and beautiful creatures were as deadly as the Sirens of old, and would lure men into the water by pretending they were drowning, only to squeeze their unsuspecting victims to death.

Sailors were the first to wear mermaid tattoos, possibly because they had no other way of capturing the mermaids' beauty. For generations mermaid tattoos were seen exclusively on men who made their living at sea; but as tattoos became more widely accepted as appropriate for everyone, the exotic and glamorous mermaid began to show up on all sorts of arms and torsos. She appeared not only in her traditional forms, but also as water nymphs; fairies; and even characters from mainstream culture, like the cartoon character Ariel from Disney's The Little Mermaid.

The mermaids in mermaid tattoos are invariably inked with long flowing hair which appears to be waving seductively in the water. The ancient often depicted Aphrodite, their goddess of love and fertility, with long hair; and the comb which is an element in both portrayals of Aphrodite and in mermaid tattoos had significant sexual meaning for the Greeks.

But mermaid tattoos, somewhat surprisingly, have become as popular among women as they have been for centuries among men. There is no denying that mermaid tattoos simply glow with mystery, femininity, and the hint of primal creative forces, and they are now decorating the shoulders and backs of as many females as males.

Mermaid tattoo designs are ideal for positioning on rounded bodily contours, because the mermaids are often drawn in curved and twisted poses. They may contain a single mermaid or a group set against an underwater backdrop with coral, fish, and treasure chests, and or reclining in a seashell. Mermaid tattoos, perhaps more than any except floral tattoos, allow a tattoo artist to indulge in a full palette of colors.

The blatantly voluptuous forms which were typical of mermaid tattoos during the years of World War II have now been joined by a wide range of mermaid tattoos in different styles. From the sharply defined simple black lines of tribal mermaid tattoos, to the riveting plaitwork of Celtic mermaid tattoos, to the dazzling sea colors, golden carp, and dragons of Oriental mermaid tattoos, mermaid tattoos are as captivating today as the mermaids of myth were to seafaring men centuries ago!

Introducing...Dirtbird!

Occasionally in my wanderings, I will meet not just tattooed people, but tattoo practitioners, and often those visiting from outside of New York City.

So it was no surprise, when I approached a gentleman across the street from where I work, at 31st and 7th, to learn that I was talking to an artist.

Working out of Punkteur Tattoos & Piercing in Joplin, Missouri, Derek "Dirtbird" Wieberg estimates he has 130-150 hours of work inked on his personal canvas.

With so much to choose from, he offered up this piece, on the right side of his neck:

It seemed fitting, considering his name.

Dirtbird praised the artist, Rick Pierceall at Karma Tattoo in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who has done all of his throat work.

Considering it is Two-for-Tattoosday, I'll share this photo as well:

That's not Dirtbird, but it's his handiwork! The owner of this tattoo is Shawn, who had the good fortune to be inked by Dirtbird. They collaborated on the design together.

Thanks to Dirt Bird and Shawn for sharing their tattoos with us here on Tattoosday!

Tune in tomorrow to see a tattoo from Katie, aka Mrs. Dirtbird!

Unicorn Tattoo Designs

Every little drop of ink that I've allowed to flow into my skin has been questioned, but none more than the little unicornUnicorn Tattoo fulcolor that decorates the inside of my ankle. My mystical unicorn goes against every other piece of art I have adorned myself with and people often question my "theme".

The only theme I have used in the placement and planning of my tattoos has been my life. The personal journey I have taken since that fateful day many years ago when I ventured into my first tattoo parlor has been colorful and inspiring. Each phase has been honored for all to see in living color upon my skin. It's when I look at my little unicorn that I remember that life is a mystery filled with miracles, dreams, and an overall hope and belief in a better tomorrow. It is my faith, my personal belief system, all summed up in a delicate, slumbering unicorn that represents every wish I've dared to dream.

No matter the design you choose, the representation should always be the same. You. Whatever phase you're living or dream you're dreaming, a tattoo can help you to dedicate your journey by honoring your past and reminding you that to live your direction must be forward. Hard to believe it can be summed up in a unicorn, but I'm living proof.

When I share the story of my unicorn, occasionally I come across someone who really gets it, and I can see the inspiration dawning in their gaze. It is at this moment, when I have provided someone with the courage to follow their own dream, that I am truly alive.

It is the mystery and myth of the unicorn that keeps me hoping for a better tomorrow, no matter where any of us stands right now. Find your own flag! Find your beacon that always brings you back to that hope. Whether through tattoos or not, it's that light we cling to that will keep us in the game.

Deciding to get a tribal unicorn tattoo is awesome! Just make sure you do yourself a favor and research for cost and quality sake. Walking into the first tattoo parlor you see is not the research I mean. Sure they may have a good selection, but that's it! Ask yourself...selection or custom design? The internet is your best and fastest way to research.

So you have the entire world wide web at your fingertips right? Use it wisely! Search engines like Google are great if you want THE SAME tattoo images that millions of others are accessing. What if you could save time and money and get a new tattoo design that was made for you and only you.

Vampire Tattoo Designs

There is quite an upsurge in the popularity of vampire and darker elements tattoos at the moment. All the more Vampire tattooreason to look out for a design that is that little bit different to those that have been made popular by the Goth and Emo cultures.

You could spend hours trawling around back street and even high street tattoo parlours looking for that elusive design but why waste your precious time?

Far better to take a look on the internet from the comfort of your own home or cave!

You'll be able to search out a customised design that'll wow others but more importantly yourself.

In order to get really unique designs to choose from, I recommend joining a tattoo gallery site on the web.

These are sites that you have to pay to join, as you're joining up as a member. But once you've joined (and they're not expensive), you have the benefits of browsing through unique, high quality designs at your leisure.

Just choose the one that's right for you and then you can download and print out the design ready to take to your favourite tattooist to get the job done.

Needless, to say, always go to a certified tattooist for health and safety reasons.

Vampire lovers obviously don't really mind blood, but you don't want it infected, do you?

So whether you're after a Nosferatu, Dracula or even an Elvira (only joking) make sure you get what you really really want when looking for that special vampire tattoo.

So, you've checked out some vampire tattoos and have decided you want one?

Make sure you do some quality research on tattoo galleries before you jump right in.

Vampires are creatures of myth and legend, and have always been a staple of literature and movies, and any other medium that relies on creatures of the nights for their mood and setting.

Nosferatu, Bela Lugosi, heck, even Elvira - Mistress of the Dark all come immediately too mind when thinking about vampires. And with the new gothic sub-culture becoming more and more mainstream everyday, you can see where the popularity of tattoos related to vampiric images comes from.

Dagger Tattoo Designs

Celts at war almost every society in history had their warriors, the Celts were no exception. The Celts drew their warriors dagger and flower tattoofrom middle and upper classes and they were the ones who did the fighting while they made use of the free poor classes to drive their chariots.

Celtic warriors lived for war. Boasting about their victories in gory detail was part of a warriors' rituals. It was also not unusual for warriors to fight amongst themselves, and in fact regarded this as an important part of their lives.

The Celts were renowned for bringing home trophies, in particular the heads of their enemies which earned them the title of head-hunters. After battle these heads were displayed at the entrance their places of worship, many also dedicated their enemy's weapons to the Gods by throwing them into a river or lake after battle. Today thousands of weapons have been dredged from the Lake of Neuchatel at La Tene.

Celtic chiefs together with the wealthiest Celts of the day wore armour and would ride out before battle in full view of their army, clashing their weapons on their shields while loudly proclaiming their great deeds. This practice was also designed to challenge their enemies at a single bout of combat. They must have been a frightening sight dressed in skins and decorated in blue tattoos. It was also not uncommon for warriors to go to battle wearing nothing but blue dye, covered with Celtic art work, naked as the day they were born.

Evolution of Celtic Weapons

Celtic warriors are known to be great swords-men and wielded them above their heads in battle, swirling and slashing from side to side, then downwards onto their enemies as easy as if they were chopping a piece of wood. Using their daggers and swords in this way absolutely terrified their enemies and gained them the reputation of being formidable opponents in war.

Dagger

To understand the dagger it should first be explained how the Bronze Age influenced the weapons of that age. Celtic swords were primarily the weapon of choice during this era which indicated that perhaps warfare was fought on a small scale between elite groups of warriors. The Iron Age influenced the classic Celtic long swords with their characteristic leaf blade design.

The longsword fell out of favor with the Celts with changing patterns of warfare and short thrusting daggers made their appearance, evident by the great number of them found in the graves of those warriors were buried in high status burials.

The long swords became shorter, had only a single edge and lacked the sharp pointed thrusting point so common in swords. These daggers were designed primarily to cut, although some were used to slash. Swords in Britain and Ireland became shorter and thinner and with increasing Celtic populations, changing warfare and larger armies, the spearman began gaining importance resulting in a decline in dagger and sword functionality.

Hebrew Tattoo Designs

Hebrew (called Ivrit in Hebrew) is said to be one of the oldest languages in the world. It was originally written with a Hebrew Tattoo Designspictographic script but has evolved over time. There are 4 periods of Hebrew throughout history. It has always been known as a holy language and has been used in prayer, sacred study, meditation and other spiritual and religious outlets for the past 2000 years.

Even the word for letter, which is "Ot" means sign or wonder, so you can begin to see the many religious affiliations. It's also becoming a pretty big trend in the tattoo industry. Hebrew started out with no vowels and they weren't introduced into the language until the 2nd half of the first millennium, therefore there are no vowels found in the Torah or in most ancient religious documents.

The four main periods of Hebrew are:

* Biblical Hebrew also known as Classical Hebrew which was used in synagogues and temples for worship and studies. It is not commonly spoken in it's pure form anymore but it is taught in many public schools in Israel and it's use continues in religious texts.

* Mishnaic Hebrew is the next phase of the language and it descended right from Biblical Hebrew. Although there are similarities, the differences are found in some of the grammar and vocab. Later, it was no longer in use as an oral language.

* Medieval Hebrew came next and it was used to translate Arabic works into Hebrew. It was quite different from the older forms of Hebrew and was created out of a desire to express scientific and philosophical ideas and concepts from Classical Greek and Medieval Arabic and consequently borrowed grammar and terminology from these languages.

Ride the Cyclone!

In college we had a game room at the Student Union.

I claimed to be a master at Arkanoid, but would occasionally play pinball. Earthshaker was fun, but there was another, carnival-themed game that would often beckon, "Ride the Cyclone!" It was, naturally, called The Cyclone.

Fast forward ten years and I would be residing in Brooklyn, home to Coney Island and the original Cyclone.

Despite having been in close proximity a number of times, I've never gone for a ride.

I was reminded of this back in September when I met Matt at the top of the escalator at the Penn Plaza Borders store.

He shared this amazing tattoo:

This is, of course, the Cyclone.

Matt is working on a Coney Island/"Carnie" theme, having lived in Brooklyn most of his adult life. Thus, the Astroland tower behind the Cyclone in the tattoo. Next up: the Wonder Wheel and the Parachute Jump, other Coney Island attractions.

He sent along a photo of the tattoo when it was initially finished:

Matt credits this tattoo to Ping at Village Rock Tattoo in Manhattan.

Thanks to Matt for sharing this great tattoo with us here on Tattoosday!

Gang Tattoo Removal

There are many reasons why people get tattoos removed. You might be able to get it removed for free. Sometimes it is to gang tattoo on headerase all memories of a certain person in your life who you had inked. Sometimes the tattoo reflects a time in your life that you no longer identify with. If you were in a gang and no longer want to affiliate with that group, you are probably thinking about gang tattoo removal options. Gangs are very serious about tattoos. Tattoos are used to distinguish different gang membership as well as classes within the gang.

Many gang tattoos are homemade which may make them easier to remove. Many people think that if you endured the pain of getting a gang tattoo, you should have no problem with the pain you will endure trying to remove it. Before trying to remove the tattoo yourself, check with local law enforcement agencies and see if there are any doctors in your area that have a gang tattoo removal program. Many medical providers will remove a gang tattoo at no charge.

There are several options to choose from when considering gang tattoo removal. You should always first consider going to a doctor to have them discuss options with you. A doctor will look at the size of the tattoo, the colors and the age to determine the best way to proceed with removal.

Laser tattoo removal and IPL treatments are now the most common types of procedures for gang tattoo removal. Both use light to break up the pigment, which can then be eliminated through your body with no problem. Dark colors like black and red can be removed much easier than yellows and light greens. Although these are the most popular types of treatments they're also very expensive. That's why if you do have a gang-related tattoo you should look into doctors or organizations that will pay to have it removed.

At one time gangs were part of the stereotypes that mainstream associated with tattoos. Street gangs, convicts, carnies, bikers, and sailors are a few of the groups that would come to a person's mind when the subject of tattoos was brought up.

Something Girly This Way Comes

I met Nadya one afternoon in the beginning of October in Borders on Penn Plaza.

She shared this tattoo, which covered up a date she had initially inscribed on her arm:

Nadya told me that she wanted something "girly".

What I found most interesting about this tattoo is that when I asked her who the artist was, she told me it was her father. I can't imagine tattooing my own daughter. I would be too nervous!

Thanks to Nadya for sharing this tattoo with us here on Tattoosday.

Wizard Tattoo Designs

Wizards have been a part of mythology for ages. Their stories evoke an image of power and mystery that is rivaled by few wizard tattoo designsother archetypes. To many people wizard tattoos call forth this mystifying picture and they often use it as an expression of the power that they feel within themselves.

Many people choose wizard tattoos that show the wizened, long-bearded old man. This figure is often meant to represent a kindly conjurer and they are usually seen casting a lightning bolt from a gnarled cane, or making predictions with a crystal ball.

Some people, however, use the darker version of a wizard. These characters normally carry a more ominous expression, and are shown creating havoc and often feature equally sinister figures such as flame breathing dragons, demons and occasionally the devil himself.

Wizard tattoos can also have a slant towards popular culture. The appearances of wizards in literature and film has had spikes in popularity over the decades and have recently become very popular again. Some people like to use scenes from these sources to express their appreciation and fondness for the art that has gone into these stories.

One of the great things about wizard tattoos is that they are often set in a scene and tell a story. The good wizard in purple, red or white robes standing on top of a mountain, calling fire from the skies; the dark wizard in black robes in deliberation with an archaic depiction of the devil.

Water Tattoo Designs

Choosing the right Japanese water tattoo can be a slightly daunting experience, because there are so many to choosewater koi tattoo from. It is important for you to do your research and look in the right places. There are quite a few sites on the Internet that have some very average designs and there are some that offer you quite a large selection. What you must do is spend a little time on some research and, as with getting any tattoo,do not rush into it because you are going to have it for a long time.

It is also worth considering what type of ink your tattooist is going to use, there are quite a few new types of ink on the market that actually have fluorescent colors, so if you want something original and that will be a 'masterpiece' then take some time to look into the vibrant new colors and check with your tattoo artist to see if they use them.

One of the best things to do is to download some of the free tattoo material that is available on several websites and start getting a general picture of the type of Japanese water tattoo that you want and also of those sites that sell them. Personally,I prefer the sites that let you download samples so that you can print out full size tattoos at home and get a much better idea of how it is going to look. You could even cut your tattoo out and stick it on your arm or wherever you want it to go, to give you an idea of how it is going to look.

There are also some tattoo galleries on the web that offer this download service and who also have literally thousands of tattoos available for downloading, these sites also normally have good indexing systems so it should make it fairly easy for you to check out many different styles of Japanese water tattoos.

Happy Thanksgiving!

In honor of the holiday, I am sharing this, my newest tattoo, located above my knee on my right thigh:

This was done at Hand of Glory in Brooklyn yesterday as part of the shop's $75 Thanksgiving Tattoo Special and was sponsored by Troll Skin, produced by Skin Actives Scientific.

For those of you just tuning in, check the pre-post here, which includes all the Thanksgiving flash designed for the occasion. I asked readers to vote on which tattoo to get, and this one sneaked out a narrow victory over the traditional Native American profile.

I like this design because it combines a lot of traditional tattoo elements and delivers an image with a sociopolitical subtext. We have the traditional American flag and handshake designs, but the added element of crossed fingers serves as a reminder that, despite apparent good intentions, there was subsequently a historical betrayal of that initial good will.

But that's just one perspective, of course, and the Thanksgiving holiday focuses on the positive in our society. The mere existence of the tattoo reminds me to be thankful, which I alluded to in my original post.

I was fortunate enough to have Brian Faulk as my artist again. He had inked my Friday the 13th tattoo last August, and I appreciate that he works quickly and concisely.

Brian Faulk at Work
It was nice, also, that this design was one of his contributions to the flash sheet, as he was kind enough to embellish slightly on the original design, and it always seems better when an artist is tattooing his or her own design. As for the idea behind it, he was trying to represent graphically a broken treaty. I'm extremely pleased with the end result.

In consideration for their sponsoring this tattoo, I will be exclusively using Skin Active's product, Troll Skin Aftercare over the next two weeks as the tattoo heals. I can already say I am pleased with the aftercare cream because it is a lot less messy than the ointment I am used to using within the first 72 hours after getting a tattoo.

I'll report back then on how their product held up compared to the regiment I've followed in the past.

I want to thank all of the readers who voted for designs, and for everyone who reads and supports the site.

And thanks again to Skin Actives for helping make this tattoo possible, to Brian at Hand of Glory, and to my family, at home in Brooklyn and across the U.S., for their support

Henna Tattoo - Traditional Art Tattoo Designs

Would you like a natural form of body art? Henna tattoo designs may be what you are looking for. Henna tattoos are anHenna Tattoo - IN Traditonal Art alternative to getting inked with a real ink tattoo. What makes henna such an attractive option? For starters, it is safer than traditional inked tattoos, and best of all, it is temporary.

Natural henna ink is used for henna tattoos. It is made from a powder that is derived from the henna plant's leaves. This powder is made into a paste that is used in the henna ink. Just like with real ink tattoos that are more permanent, your tattoo artist can paint a henna tattoo design anywhere on your body on your body that you would like.

Henna tattooing is a long lasting tradition that has been practiced and passed down from generation to generation. Even the ancient tombs of Egyptian pharaohs have been reported to contain traces of henna art. Henna tattoo art remains popular today, even more so because of it is a natural tradition.

Although henna is reported to be safe, there have been rare cases of allergic reactions resulting from it being applied to the skin. Before you have a tattoo applied to your skin using henna ink, it is wise to test a small area of your body to see if you have any allergic reactions, especially if you have sensitive skin. Most people will not experience any reaction, and will then be able to have the henna tattoo design applied to their skin.

It is also a good idea to test your skin to see how henna ink colors will appear. This is because your skin tone is the background for the henna tattoo design, and an ink color will have a slightly different appearance on one skin tone than on another skin tone.
