Eye Tattoos

Eye tattoos are nothing new, but they are slowly getting more attention. What was once popular only with prison inmateseye tattoo is becoming a prominent feature of avid tattoo enthusiasts. However, this is one tattoo that definitely comes with a "at your own risk" clause. Tattooing your eyes can be one of the most dangerous things you can do for your future vision health.

How do you tattoo your eyes? That's usually the first question that comes up when considering eye tattoos. Most of us understand the process of 'inking' the skin with a needle and tattoo ink. Eye tattoos involve exactly the same process. A needle is placed into the eyeball where colored ink is injected under the cornea of the eyes.

According to EyeBallTattoo.net, eyeball or corneal tattooing is a procedure, when a particular dying agent or ink is injected or otherwise delivered under the top layer of an eye, called cornea. Cornea is a very delicate eye's part with the thickness of about 0.5-0.6 mm in the center and 0.6-0.8 mm at the periphery. About 90% of cornea consists of stroma, a middle layer containing mainly collagen fibers. Stroma is exactly the place, where ink is delivered during eyeball tattooing. In view of miniature structure of cornea and the fact that it is filled with nerve endings, certain medical risks are always present while performing eyeball tattooing. Furthermore, it should be noted that cornea plays a key role in human's ability to see. Thus, damaging cornea may cause serious sight problems up to blindness.

Eye tattoos have been around for thousands of years. While the procedures have changed dramatically over the years, the risks are none-the-less very high. Complications from eye tattoos can include keratitis, which can occur if the ink does not remain in the cornea and leaks to other areas of the eyes, toxic reactions, iridocyclitis, corneal epithelial defects, corneal ulceration, and ultimately blindness. The most common risks associated with eye tattoos are eye infection, perforation and hemorrhage.

Since the cornea is just a thin layer, it is very easy for the needle to penetrate through it reaching the underlying layers of the eye. Because the procedure of eye tattooing can involve multiple pricks in order to spread the ink evenly throughout the eye, the risk for an inflammatory reaction is extremely high.

In all honesty, the overall risks to tattooing your eyes are not fully understood simply because eye tattooing hasn't been researched enough. The long term safety and risks have not been evaluated regarding inking one's eyes, ink seeping into the eyes or ink seeping into the bloodstream from the eyes.

Many people think about getting a tattoo. There are a lot of ideas out there to choose from, that's why you probably want to explore as many possibilities as you can. Finding designs that are original and you won't see on other people can be quite hard. However you don't have to find a design somewhere to get a tattoo, you can also come up with your own idea, put it on paper and then show it to a tattoo artist.
